The Flight Experience
The Buffalo and Niagara Falls region offers a stunning, high-contrast flight experience dominated by massive water features and the notorious climate of the Great Lakes. The environment is characterized by the flat coastal plain of Lake Erie and the Niagara River valley, leading to open approaches. However, the proximity to the lake creates challenging weather, with severe winds and legendary lake-effect snow in winter. The photogrammetry, enhanced in World Update X (USA), captures the historic, architecturally rich Buffalo core and the majestic, high-detail rendering of the Falls themselves.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport (KBUF)
KBUF is the primary international airport for Western New York.
The Strip: KBUF operates two runways: 10/28 and 05/23 (both long and suitable for mainline jet traffic).
The Challenge: Lake-Effect Weather: The primary challenge here is weather management. Situated near the eastern tip of Lake Erie, KBUF is directly in the path of cold air sweeping across the warmer lake water. Sim pilots should be prepared for sudden, severe crosswinds, reduced visibility, and the legendary winter operations (practicing de-icing procedures and landings on low-visibility, contaminated runways).
Visual Highlights
Niagara Falls: The single, absolute, unmissable visual spectacle. The massive, crescent-shaped Horseshoe Falls and the adjacent American Falls are perfectly rendered high-detail POIs. This is the ultimate scenic target for any flight in the region.

Buffalo City Hall: The towering, ornate Art Deco City Hall dominates the downtown skyline. It is the tallest municipal building in the U.S. when built and serves as a major vertical anchor for the photogrammetry core.
Peace Bridge: This historic bridge connects Buffalo (U.S.) and Fort Erie (Canada) at the head of the Niagara River. It is a striking structural landmark marking the transition from Lake Erie to the river.
Highmark Stadium: Located south of the city, this massive football stadium (home of the Bills) is a major sporting POI and a distinct landmark in the flat surrounding terrain.
Lake Erie: The immense body of water is your primary VFR guide, creating the eastern boundary of the flying environment and dictating the weather.
Pilot’s Note: The "Falls Loop"
For a flight that combines extreme scenery with the procedural transition, take a regional jet (like a CRJ or E-Jet) and plan a scenic flight path.
The Maneuver: Depart KBUF and head northwest, following the Niagara River toward the Falls. Maintain a safe altitude (e.g., 2,500 ft) and execute a wide, deliberate loop over Niagara Falls to appreciate the massive scale of the water flow before crossing the Peace Bridge back into U.S. airspace. After completing the scenic loop, turn southeast to rejoin the high-altitude commercial pattern and execute a standard ILS approach back to KBUF, practicing the transition from VFR spectacle to IFR professionalism.
