The Flight Experience
Columbus offers a straightforward yet rewarding Central Ohio flight experience, defined by its flat terrain, its distinctive state government architecture, and the immense presence of Ohio State University (OSU). The city is centrally located on the flat plain, bisected by the Scioto River, which provides open approaches. The photogrammetry, prominently featured in World Update X (USA), captures the dense downtown core, the unique design of its capitol complex, and the sprawling OSU campus, making it an excellent location for both VFR and IFR training.
John Glenn Columbus International Airport (KCMH)
KCMH is a major international hub for Central Ohio, serving as a primary gateway and a high-volume cargo hub (FedEx, UPS).
The Strip: KCMH operates two long, parallel runways: 10R/28L and 10L/28R (both over 10,000 feet long), capable of handling all mainline jet traffic.
The Challenge: Procedural and Weather: The primary flight experience is procedural accuracy over a flat landscape, demanding precise tracking during instrument approaches. Like much of the Midwest, KCMH frequently sees winter operations (snow and ice), requiring pilots to practice proper de-icing procedures and performance calculations on contaminated runways.
Visual Highlights
Ohio State University (OSU) Campus: The massive, sprawling campus is the single largest feature in the northern part of the city. Located along the Olentangy River, it is an essential visual reference.
Ohio Stadium ("The Horseshoe"): The iconic, massive football stadium on the OSU campus. Its unique horseshoe shape is perfectly rendered in the photogrammetry, serving as the most recognizable sporting POI and a key VFR anchor.
Ohio State Capitol Building: Located downtown, this massive, distinguished neoclassical building (which lacks a traditional dome) serves as the primary government landmark and focal point for the downtown PG core.
The Scioto River and Bridges: The river flows directly through the downtown area. The photogrammetry highlights the city's modern waterfront development and the distinct, new pedestrian bridges that span the river.
LeVeque Tower: This distinctive, historic Art Deco skyscraper is one of the tallest buildings downtown. Its unique architecture makes it stand out against the modern glass towers.
Pilot’s Note: The "Ohio State Circuit"
For a flight that maximizes the region's prominent landmarks, take a medium jet (like a B737) and plan a scenic circuit before arrival.
The Maneuver: Depart KCMH and climb to the west. Once clear of the immediate airspace, track north toward the Ohio State University campus. Execute a controlled, wide orbit over the campus, keeping the massive Ohio Stadium in sight. This allows for a spectacular view of the entire university and downtown skyline before turning back east/southeast. Then, follow the required approach vectors for Runway 28L back into KCMH, transitioning from the fun VFR circuit to the precision of a procedural jet landing.
