The Flight Experience
Dusseldorf (Düsseldorf) offers a sophisticated, modern German flight experience, characterized by sleek corporate architecture, vast open approaches, and the powerful presence of the Rhine River. The city is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and a major commercial and fashion hub. The flying environment is open and flat, providing smooth conditions, but the photogrammetry, a key feature of World Update VI (DACH), vividly captures the two sides of the city: the historic Altstadt and the avant-garde structures of the MedienHafen (Media Harbour).
Dusseldorf Airport (EDDL)
EDDL is Germany's third busiest airport and a major international hub, strategically located just 7km north of the city center.
The Strip: EDDL operates two parallel runways: 05R/23L and 05L/23R (both long, over 3,000m), capable of handling all mainline jet traffic.
The Challenge: The airspace is extremely busy, situated in the heart of the dense Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area. Sim pilots must navigate complex arrival and departure procedures and be prepared for frequent traffic sequencing. The approaches are generally smooth, but the close proximity to the city demands high procedural accuracy and noise abatement adherence.
Visual Highlights
Rhine Tower (Rheinturm): The absolute vertical anchor of the city. This massive, slender communications tower stands right on the Rhine River bank and is the most easily visible landmark, serving as your primary VFR guide.

MedienHafen (Media Harbour): This is the city's architectural signature. The photogrammetry perfectly renders this district's unique modern buildings, including the famous "twisting" structures designed by Frank Gehry. This area provides a fantastic contrast to the historic Old Town.
Rhine River: The wide, massive river is your central geographical guide, flowing directly past the downtown core and the Media Harbour. It separates the airport from the city center and is essential for visual navigation.
Königsallee (Kö): The upscale, tree-lined central shopping street (Germany's version of the Champs-Élysées). Look for the clear, distinctive trench and canal that run down the center of this avenue.
Old Town (Altstadt): The dense historic core along the Rhine, famous for being the "longest bar in the world." Its traditional architecture contrasts sharply with the nearby modern towers.
Pilot’s Note: The "Media Harbour Glide"
For a flight that maximizes the city's modern architectural beauty, take a medium jet (like an A320) or high-performance GA aircraft and plan a visual approach.
The Maneuver: Follow the IFR procedure until you are cleared for the visual segment. Execute a long, slow glide, tracking the course of the Rhine River south toward the city. This path guides you directly past the Rhine Tower and the stunning modern architecture of the MedienHafen. This low-level glide requires careful management of airspeed and descent, rewarding you with an intimate, panoramic view of the city's modern and historic architecture before turning north to align with the Runway 23 thresholds.
