The Flight Experience in Eindhoven offers a masterclass in modern geometry and industrial heritage. Known as the "City of Light" and the birthplace of Philips, Eindhoven is a pilot's dream for daytime VFR because its landmarks are uniquely shaped—often resembling objects from science fiction. It lacks the dense medieval "clutter" of Bruges, offering instead a clean, organized urban layout that feels like a tech-hub from above.
The airspace is dominated by Eindhoven Airport (EHEH), which serves a dual purpose as a major commercial terminal and a critical military airbase. Expect to share the pattern with military transport aircraft alongside civil airliners. Because the airport is so close to the city, the transition from "wheels up" to "sightseeing" is almost instantaneous.
The "Flying Saucer": The Evoluon is the city’s most unmistakable landmark. From 1,500 feet, this massive concrete UFO looks as if it just landed on the western edge of the city. It is the perfect visual anchor for your base-leg turn when returning to EHEH.
The Glass "Blob": In the city center, the organic, curved glass structure known as The Blob provides a stark contrast to the surrounding traditional brickwork. It’s small but highly reflective, often catching the sun and acting as a glinting waypoint for low-level city tours.
Philips Stadium: Home to PSV Eindhoven, this stadium is rendered with impressive detail. Its open corners and white structural beams make it a primary visual reporting point for pilots tracking toward the city core from the north.
High Tech Campus: To the south, the "smartest square kilometer in Europe" appears as a series of sleek, mirrored-glass buildings perfectly arranged around a long central lake. It looks more like a resort than a research park from the air.
For a test of precision and performance, depart Eindhoven Airport (EHEH) Runway 03 and immediately bank right to follow the ring road toward the city center.
Your challenge is to maintain 1,200 feet while threading the needle between the Evoluon and Philips Stadium. Once you reach the St. Catherine’s Church spires, perform a steep "discovery turn" to head south toward the High Tech Campus.
The goal is to manage your bank angle and power to stay clear of the noise-sensitive residential areas while keeping these modern architectural marvels in sight.
