The Flight Experience
Halle and Leipzig offer a dual-city flight experience centered on the logistical heart of Central Germany. This region, known for its flat terrain and historical significance, is defined by large, open spaces and dense, beautifully preserved city cores. Both cities received extensive photogrammetry (PG) in World Update VI (DACH), allowing sim pilots to compare the grand, dense architecture of Leipzig's industrial past with the historic university charm of Halle. The flying environment is open and fast, making the single, massive airport the primary focus.
Leipzig/Halle Airport (EDDP)
EDDP is a massive international hub, strategically located exactly halfway between the two cities. It is one of Europe's most important cargo airports, serving as a primary base for DHL and a major Amazon air facility, meaning it sees heavy nighttime traffic.
The Strip: The airport features two huge, parallel runways: 08R/26L and 08L/26R (both over 3,600m long), capable of handling the largest cargo jets (e.g., Antonov An-124).
The Challenge: The Bridges: The airport is globally famous for its unique geography: the Autobahn (A9) and a high-speed ICE train line run directly through the airport complex, passing under the two main runways via massive concrete bridges. Taxying across these structures (especially the bridge connecting the main terminals) is a must-see detail for simmers.
Visual Highlights
Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Leipzig): This monumental structure commemorating the 1813 Battle of the Nations is the most dominant landmark in the entire region. It is a massive, towering monument visible for miles and serves as the ultimate VFR anchor for the city of Leipzig.
Marktkirche and Roter Turm (Halle): The heart of Halle is defined by the Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen, a stunning Gothic church with five distinct towers, and the adjacent Roter Turm (Red Tower). Their unique arrangement is unmistakable from the air.
Leipzig Hauptbahnhof: Europe's largest railway terminus, this immense station features a beautifully detailed facade and a vast train shed. It defines the northern edge of the downtown PG area.
City-Hochhaus (Leipzig): This distinctive, pencil-shaped skyscraper near the university is the tallest building in Leipzig. It provides a modern, vertical contrast to the historic skyline.
Moritzburg Castle (Halle): A medieval castle situated on the banks of the Saale River. Its position near the river and its large, sprawling complex are clearly defined in the photogrammetry, marking the western boundary of the city's historical core.
Pilot’s Note: The "Two-City VFR Hop"
For a flight that showcases the region's geography, take a light jet or a fast turboprop (like a Citation or a TBM 930) and fly a scenic triangle between the two cities.
The Maneuver: Depart EDDP and fly the short, direct 20-minute route west to Halle. Execute a low orbit (1,500ft) over the Marktkirche and Moritzburg Castle. Then, turn south-east and follow the A9 Autobahn back towards Leipzig, using the Völkerschlachtdenkmal as your final destination. A final, high-speed orbit over the monument before returning to the cargo-heavy pattern at EDDP makes for a rewarding flight.
