The Flight Experience
Omaha offers a dynamic Midwestern flight experience, defined by the immense Missouri River and a stunning, concentrated downtown core. The city sits on a flat river plain, which provides long, open approaches. The flying environment is highly exposed to the strong, shifting winds of the Great Plains, demanding crosswind proficiency. The photogrammetry, prominently featured in World Update X (USA), captures the dense historic Old Market district and the spectacular engineering of its signature pedestrian bridge, making it an excellent destination for both scenic and procedural flying.
Eppley Airfield (KOMA)
KOMA is the major regional hub for Nebraska and the heart of the Omaha metropolitan area. It is located immediately north of downtown, right on the Missouri River plain.
The Strip: KOMA operates two long runways: 14/32 and 18/36 (both over 8,500 feet long), capable of handling mainline jet traffic.
The Challenge: Great Plains Wind: The primary challenge here is wind management. The airport is located in the wide, open valley of the Missouri River, making it extremely exposed to strong, gusty crosswinds that sweep across the Great Plains. Sim pilots must be prepared for constant turbulence and be highly proficient in making swift, decisive crosswind corrections on final approach.
Visual Highlights
Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge: This is the city's absolute, unmissable visual anchor. The massive, unique curved cable-stayed bridge spans the Missouri River, linking Omaha to Council Bluffs (Iowa). Its distinctive S-curve geometry is beautifully rendered and serves as the ultimate VFR checkpoint.
Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium: Located just south of the airport, this massive complex is one of the world’s largest zoos. Its large, recognizable structures, particularly its unique dome and indoor rainforest habitats, are clearly identifiable POIs.
The Missouri River: The wide, powerful river defines the entire eastern boundary of the city and the airport. It serves as an unmissable, massive VFR guide, separating Nebraska from Iowa.
Downtown/Old Market PG Core: The dense cluster of modern high-rises and the preserved, brick-lined buildings of the Old Market district are captured in the photogrammetry, providing a rich, textured ground view.
Mutual of Omaha Tower: The distinctive, large corporate skyscraper provides a clear vertical anchor in the downtown skyline.
Pilot’s Note: The "Bob the Bridge Run"
For a flight that maximizes the region's geographical and architectural spectacle, take a light GA or turboprop aircraft (like a C172 or TBM 930) and plan a scenic VFR run.
The Maneuver: Depart KOMA and track south down the Missouri River. Execute a controlled, low-altitude pass (around 1,500 feet) that guides you directly over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and the downtown PG core. This run requires you to fight the prevailing crosswind while maintaining a precise line over the river. Execute a wide orbit over the Henry Doorly Zoo before climbing out to the south. This circuit rewards the pilot with an intimate view of Omaha's defining landmarks and its challenging river-valley winds.
