The Flight Experience
Parma offers a quintessential flight experience of the Po Valley, defined by low-lying flatness, agricultural richness, and a historic city core bursting with Renaissance art. The city is bisected by the narrow Parma River (often dry depending on the season), creating a clear visual guide. The terrain is overwhelmingly flat, making VFR navigation straightforward but demanding precision when breaking out of instrument conditions. The photogrammetry, added in World Update IX (Italy and Malta), captures the dense, historic heart, highlighting the magnificent pink marble of its most famous landmarks against the uniform terracotta roofs.
Parma Airport (LIMP)
LIMP (Giuseppe Verdi Airport) is a compact regional airport that primarily handles domestic and short-haul European routes.
The Strip: LIMP features a single runway (02/20), which is 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) long, perfectly sized for regional turboprops (ATR/Dash-8) and small commercial jets (A320/B737).
The Challenge: Approaches are generally unobstructed over the flat valley floor, but the airport’s environment is dominated by the surrounding agricultural and industrial zones (home to famous food production sites). Sim pilots should practice the long final approach to Runway 20, which tracks straight over the rural plains, requiring the maintenance of a stable descent profile over unpopulated terrain.
Visual Highlights
Parma Cathedral and Baptistery: This historic complex is the city's absolute VFR anchor. Look for the massive Romanesque Cathedral adjacent to the distinctive, octagonal Baptistery. The beautiful pink marble of the Baptistery makes it a unique, colorful POI that stands out from the terracotta cityscape.

Palazzo della Pilotta: A massive, sprawling complex located near the river bend. This huge building, which houses the National Gallery and the Teatro Farnese, is one of the largest single structures in the PG area and is unmissable from above.
Cittadella di Parma: Located south of the city center, this former star-shaped fortress is now a large park. Its unique, five-pointed geometric shape is perfectly preserved and provides a massive, easily identifiable pattern for VFR reference.
Parco Ducale: A large, orderly ducal park located west of the city core, bordered by the Parma River. Its structured design contrasts sharply with the medieval grid of the Old Town.
The Parma River: The river, though narrow, is the crucial dividing line for the city's PG core, cutting a visible path through the density toward the Po River.
Pilot’s Note: The "Cittadella Circuit"
For a flight that maximizes the city's unique architectural geometry, take a light GA aircraft and plan a short VFR circuit.
The Maneuver: Depart LIMP and fly south toward the city, navigating the final approach path to the Runway 20 ILS. Orbit the Cittadella di Parma at a safe altitude (around 1,500 feet), using its star shape as a perfect circular guide. As you orbit, you will have a spectacular view of the entire historic core, including the Baptistery and the Palazzo della Pilotta. It’s a rewarding circuit that showcases the city’s compact beauty before you rejoin the pattern for landing.
