The Flight Experience
Perugia offers one of the most geographically dramatic flying experiences in central Italy. The historic Old Town is perched high atop a steep, uneven hill, creating a spectacular, imposing silhouette visible from all directions. The flying environment is defined by the surrounding green, rolling hills of Umbria and the distant peaks of the Apennine Mountains. The photogrammetry, added in World Update IX (Italy and Malta), captures the dense, medieval core and the city's vertical profile with stunning detail. This is a highly scenic region where VFR flying demands constant awareness of rising terrain.
Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi - Umbria International Airport (LIRZ)
LIRZ is the regional airport serving central Umbria, named after the region's most famous native saint. It is situated on the valley floor, well below the elevation of the city.
The Strip: LIRZ features a single runway (01/19), which is 2,199 meters (7,215 feet) long, suitable for commercial jets up to A320/B737 size.
The Challenge: While the immediate approaches are clear, the surrounding Apennine terrain dictates high minimum safe altitudes and procedural adherence. The approach to Runway 01 offers a sweeping, scenic turn over the valley before lining up for the final segment. The contrast between the valley airport and the high-altitude city view provides a unique visual experience.
Visual Highlights
The Elevated Old Town: The entire PG core of Perugia is itself the landmark. Look for the massive, steep profile of the city rising abruptly from the valley floor. The density of the terracotta-tiled roofs creates a beautiful, cohesive mass perched on the hill.
Palazzo dei Priori and Fontana Maggiore: The massive Gothic Palazzo dei Priori and the central Fontana Maggiore define the main square (Piazza IV Novembre) in the heart of the Old Town. These detailed POIs are the urban anchor of the city's PG data.
Perugina Chocolate Factory: Located north of the city in the San Sisto area, this massive industrial complex is easily identifiable. This famous factory complex is a unique, non-historic visual reference point.
Lake Trasimeno: Located northwest of the city, this massive, shallow lake is a prominent natural landmark. Its large, flat expanse of water is a critical VFR reference feature for the entire Umbria region.
Assisi: Though not Perugia, the beautifully rendered hilltop town of Assisi and the massive Basilica of Saint Francis are clearly visible to the east and are a key scenic destination for any flight from LIRZ.
Pilot’s Note: The "Umbrian Hills Run"
For a flight that maximizes the region's stunning historical scenery, take a light GA aircraft (like a C172 or Vulcanair P.68) and plan a VFR shuttle to the neighboring historic site.
The Maneuver: Depart LIRZ and fly southeast toward Assisi. Maintain an altitude of 2,500–3,000 feet to safely clear the local hills. Orbit the massive Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi for a spectacular view of the tiered structure and the surrounding hillside. Then, turn west and execute a descending fly-by over the main hill of Perugia before returning to the LIRZ traffic pattern. This route is an essential Italian historical VFR tour.
