The Flight Experience
Prague offers one of the most historically rich and visually spectacular flight experiences in Central Europe. The city's geography is defined by the sweeping, serpentine curves of the Vltava River, which flows through a valley framed by low hills and crowned by the immense, elevated complex of Prague Castle. The cityscape is characterized by a cohesive sea of red-tiled roofs and Gothic and Baroque spires. The photogrammetry, a major feature of World Update XIV (Central Eastern Europe), captures the heart of the Old Town and the castle complex with stunning fidelity, making it a pure joy for VFR sightseeing.
Václav Havel Airport Prague (LKPR)
LKPR is the main international airport in the Czech Republic, serving as a major hub for European and low-cost carriers.
The Strip: The airport is a large facility with two long, intersecting runways: 06/24 and 13/31 (both over 3,500m), capable of handling all heavy jet traffic.
The Challenge: While the terrain around the airport is flat, making instrument approaches straightforward, the airspace is highly active, demanding proficiency in following complex Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) that often vector you around the city's sensitive airspace. The scenic beauty on the visual segment of the approach can be a pleasant distraction, requiring the pilot to maintain focus.
Visual Highlights
Prague Castle (Pražský hrad): Perched high on a hill overlooking the Vltava River, this massive, sprawling complex is the absolute definitive visual anchor. Its sheer size and elevated position are visible from all approach vectors.
Charles Bridge (Karlův most): This iconic, medieval stone bridge is one of the most recognizable POIs in the world. It is clearly rendered in the photogrammetry, connecting the Old Town to the Lesser Town and marking the tightest bend in the river.
Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock: The heart of the Old Town's PG. The massive, open square and the intricate detail of the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall are unmissable when flying over the center.
The Vltava River: The wide, curving river is your primary VFR highway, flowing dramatically through the city and creating distinct islands and bends, allowing for easy visual navigation.
Petřín Hill and Tower: Located across the river from the castle, this hill is topped by the Petřín Lookout Tower (a smaller replica of the Eiffel Tower). Its height provides a clear, separate vertical reference point for the city's western half.
Pilot’s Note: The "Castle Glide"
For the most rewarding visual flight, take a smooth, medium jet (like a B737 or A320) and fly the approach into Runway 24.
The Maneuver: Follow the STAR procedure until you are cleared for the visual approach. This flight path will often guide you in from the south, providing an incredible panoramic view of the entire city. Execute a long, slow final descent, keeping the Vltava River to your left and the massive, elevated Prague Castle on your right. This glide allows for maximum viewing time over the stunning photogrammetry before you touch down on the long runway.
