The Flight Experience
Takamatsu offers a stunning and unique coastal flight experience, defined by the picturesque beauty of the Seto Inland Sea and its hundreds of islands. The city sits on a flat coastal plain, backed by low mountains, making it a gateway to one of Japan's most celebrated seascapes. The flying environment is open and visually dynamic, constantly shifting between dense urban photogrammetry and the intricate natural geography of the islands. The scenery, a major feature of World Update I (Japan), vividly captures the beautiful traditional gardens and the bustling modern port.
Takamatsu Airport (RJOT)
RJOT is the major regional airport for Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku.
The Strip: RJOT features a single runway (08/26) measuring 2,500 meters (8,202 feet), suitable for mainline jet traffic.
The Challenge: Mountain Obstruction: The primary challenge here is terrain awareness. While the approaches are generally clear, the airport is situated in a valley surrounded by low, rolling mountains. Pilots must adhere to strict minimum safe altitudes to clear the ridges, especially when flying non-standard visual procedures. The approach to Runway 26 provides a clear glide over the flat land toward the mountains.
Visual Highlights
Ritsurin Garden: This is the city's absolute, unmissable visual anchor. One of Japan's most famous traditional gardens, its large size, intricate ponds, and distinct teahouse structures are beautifully rendered and provide a unique, tranquil landmark in the urban area.
Sunport Takamatsu: The modern port area and ferry terminals are highly visible. Look for the massive, prominent skyscraper, Symbol Tower, which provides the key vertical anchor for the downtown skyline and the ferry traffic to the islands.
The Seto Inland Sea Islands: The region's defining natural feature. The dozens of small, distinct islands (e.g., Megijima, Ogijima) dotting the sea are a spectacular sight, creating an intricate visual puzzle for VFR island hopping.
Takamatsu Castle Ruins (Tamamo Park): The historic castle remains are located right on the coast. Unique for its seawater moats, its square shape and surrounding water are clearly visible in the photogrammetry, marking the edge of the Old Town.
The Mountains: The low, rolling, forested mountains that provide the southern backdrop to the city, creating a clear visual contrast with the flat coastal plain.
Pilot’s Note: The "Seto Inland Sea Island Hop"
For a flight that maximizes the region's unique geography, take a light GA aircraft (like a C172 or DA62) and plan a scenic VFR run.
The Maneuver: Depart RJOT and fly north, quickly descending toward the coast. Your goal is to fly a low-altitude VFR route (around 1,500 feet) that threads its way between the dozens of small, mountainous islands of the Seto Inland Sea. This maneuver requires constant course and altitude adjustments to appreciate the rugged beauty of the islands and the clear, complex waterways, rewarding you with an unparalleled visual experience before you return to the busy RJOT airspace.
