The Flight Experience
Tokushima offers a rich, coastal flight experience defined by the massive delta of the Yoshino River, the distinctive, isolated hill of Mount Bizan, and its proximity to the dramatic Naruto Strait. The city is situated on the flat coastal plain of Shikoku Island, facing the Kii Channel. The flying environment is highly exposed to Pacific weather systems but is visually anchored by the river and the urban core. The photogrammetry, a key feature of World Update I (Japan), captures the dense downtown area and provides a gateway to one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the region.
Tokushima Airport (RJOS)
RJOS is a major regional airport that operates in shared airspace with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), making it a dynamic civil/military environment.
The Strip: RJOS features a single runway (17/35) measuring 2,500 meters (8,202 feet), suitable for mainline jet traffic.
The Challenge: Shared Airspace: The primary challenge here is managing the shared airspace. Sim pilots must be prepared to integrate seamlessly with active military operations, adhere strictly to ATC vectors, and maintain high situational awareness on final approach, where civilian and military traffic often operate in close proximity. The approaches are otherwise clear, gliding over the flat delta plain.
Visual Highlights
Mount Bizan: The distinctive, isolated mountain/hill immediately west of the downtown core. Its wooded slopes and elevated position make it the key VFR anchor, visible from all approaches.
Yoshino River Delta: The massive, wide Yoshino River—one of Japan's longest—forms a huge, flat delta plain as it enters the Kii Channel. This vast, clear geographical feature provides the main reference point for the entire region.
Tokushima Castle Ruins and Park: Located at the foot of Mount Bizan, the historic castle grounds and park provide a clear, defined visual landmark near the city center.
Awa Odori Kaikan: The cultural center for the famous Awa dance is often rendered as a key POI, marking a central feature of the downtown PG core.
Naruto Whirlpools (Nearby): Located northeast of the city in the Naruto Strait. While distant, the spectacular tidal whirlpools (one of the world's fastest tidal currents) are a key scenic destination for a VFR excursion, creating a unique visual pattern in the water masking.
Pilot’s Note: The "Naruto Whirlpool Run"
For a flight that maximizes the region's unique geography and natural wonders, take a high-performance turboprop (like a TBM 930) or a fast GA aircraft and plan a scenic VFR run.
The Maneuver: Depart RJOS and fly northeast, tracking the coast toward the Naruto Strait and the Onaruto Bridge. Maintain a low altitude (around 2,000 feet) and execute a tight, controlled pass over the massive strait. The visual challenge is trying to spot the spectacular tidal whirlpools in the water, which require sharp eyes and a stable flight path over the turbulent water. This run provides a fantastic technical challenge in managing a scenic VFR route near a major natural phenomenon.
